Sport News - Visual Identity & Opening Sequence
When Viaplay launched Denmark's first 24/7 sports news channel in August 2024, I was responsible for developing the visual identities of four programmes, including Sport News.
With news segments running throughout the day, I started exploring ways to distinguish morning, midday, afternoon and evening. As a huge fan of typography, I jumped straight into experimenting with oversized words and numbers, building on the channel's type-based branding.
The idea of distinguishing the segments by time didn't quite resonate with the production team, so I shifted the focus to the channel's branding, playful animations of sports balls and memorable moments in Danish sporting history.
Meanwhile, a new request came from senior management: the channel had to be blue. My initial explorations had followed the brand's vibrant colour palette, capturing the energy and playfulness of sport itself.
And then everything turned blue. Literally or metaphorically? I'll leave that up to you.
But I still liked the numbers. What if, instead of telling the time, they became a countdown? Suddenly, it all made sense. The countdown built anticipation for the show while capturing the excitement surrounding the channel's launch.
I edited footage of memorable Danish sporting achievements and combined it with playful animations to capture the energy and excitement of sport.
Finally, the wait was over!
Beyond the opening sequence, I extended the visual identity across promotional materials and the studio environment, adapting it to different formats while maintaining a consistent visual language.
